The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an absolute masterpiece and this opinion is shared by fans and critics alike, as shown by the 10 million copies sold and over 800 awards garnered.
The winning formula consists of a well-crafted story, vast open world and stunning visuals, and the strong glue that helps these elements come together to shape the exceptionally
immersive Witcher universe is undoubtedly the game’s breath-taking audio.
With such an enormous exploration space, creating the sound design for the game must have been a gargantuan task. The recordists were reportedly wandering around woods,
beaches and farms for weeks to capture the unique ambiences.
The organic feel of the environments within the game is due not only to the painstaking gathering of authentic sounds, but their layering through a complex, highly dynamic system governed by different parameters like time of day, location and weather conditions. It would be a challenge to identify any obvious loops or repeating sounds – suspension of disbelief at its finest.
The score itself is outstanding, for it manages to achieve the perfect blend of archaic ethnic exoticism and modern-day Hollywood drama. A large portion of it is based on traditional
Slavic music, performed by Polish folksters Percival on medieval instruments, some of which handmade by the band themselves. The long-necked lute, byzantine lyra, davul and hurdy gurdy are part of the collection of unusual instruments, which, coupled with the open throat singing typical of Central and Eastern European folklore, give the music of The Witcher 3 its unique colouring.
Big kudos to the audio team for creating an atmosphere that sucks you in and will not let go. You may find yourself stopped in your tracks, enjoying the sound of the breeze through your… well, technically, Geralt’s hair. I, for one, almost got mauled by a pack of wolves by sitting around trying to make out the lyrics of a moving Bulgarian folk song in the middle of a
battle sequence.
But don’t be like me, avoid a gruesome death and listen to the sensational soundtrack on its own. It will take you on a journey through strange, yet familiar, ancient realms.
